US judge allows annual New Year's Eve 'Possum Drop' over animal-lovers' protest {VIDEO}

RALEIGH, N.C. - A North Carolina judge has approved a mountain town's New Year's Eve celebration in which organizers capture a possum and hoist and lower it in a cage at midnight.

Attorneys for the Wildlife Resources Commission and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals were in court in Raleigh on Monday. The animal-welfare organization sought to block the annual Possum Drop in Brasstown next week. A PETA lawyer says the lights, noise and crowd of people can wreck a possum's nerves and health.

The state commission issued a permit Friday allowing the organizer to capture the animal.

The judge ruled the show in Brasstown can go on with a captured possum.

Possum Drop Brasstown NC
The most exciting thing that we do in Brasstown, besides going to the John C. Campbell Folk School and dance with the pretty Danish girl, is "Lowering the Opossum on New Year's Eve." If New York can drop a "Ball", Georgia can drop a "Peach", then we can lower the Opossum."
We have a lot of opossum thangs and stuff like canned opossum run over here in front of Clay's Corner by Mercer Scroggs...We even have the new Diet Lite for you over achievers at the supper table. There are T-shirts, bumper stickers, videos, coffee mugs, refrigerator magnets, and Clay's Corner Bubble Bath to keep ya clean. So, if you need something for that special someone who has it all, get him some of this stuff!...
And, if you stop by, you can fill-er-up at the gas pump, grab a fresh-dipped ice cream cone, and listen to the finest Bluegrass music in the South on Friday nights, when the local musicians take a turn pick'n and a grin'n until closing time
